After a really long spell away from the needles I have challenged myself to knit a patchwork throw for my bed. Right in the deep end, no faffing about and easily the biggest thing I will have ever knitted. This is for many reasons though and not just because I am mad. I need to sit and rest in the evenings and I am terrible at doing so. So I figured that knitting would keep me occupied and keep me somewhat still. It also keeps me crafting without having to drag loads of stuff out of the craft cupboard to only put it all back again a few hours later. Lastly I saw some knitted patchwork throws on Pinterest and fell in love and figured the only way to get the colours I want would be to knit my own. So I asked my new craft friend Liz for some tips ad she suggested a column idea. Instead of knitting lots of squares I knit lots of ‘scarfes’ and then sew them together. Genius. Here it is so far…
Now Liz is bit of an expert on this knitting lark and has her own Etsy page, so I cheekily asked her some questions and for her to give us her Etsy URL so we can all have a looksy.
How long have you been a knitter? – I learn’t to knit as a child but it was only when I was expecting my eldest that I really got into knitting and made lots of things for her and for hubby and myself. One of the first things I made for hubby came out way to big so was more like a dress. When my children and friends children were small I used to do lots of picture knitted jumpers for them. One of my friends always calls me the queen. When her 2 boys were in a shop wearing snowman jumpers I had made them someone asked them who knitted their jumpers so the said “the queen.” I have suffered from M.E for over 27 years and knitting and my other crafts have helped keep me sane. I only got into designing my own patterns about 7 years ago as therapy after a breakdown. In the last 7 years I have gone from an M.E sufferer who knits to a designer/knitter who happens to have M.E and fibromyalgia. I have a long suffering husband who last year turned one of our rooms into a craft room for me .
Is this your main craft or do you do any other crafts?Along side knitting I also, cross stitch, make cards, jewellery making, needle felting and this year I want to learn to crochet.
You have an Etsy page – whats the url so we can all have a nosey? I have an online shop where I sell my patterns and made items. www.etsy.com/shop/madmumknits
Whats your favourite thing to knit ?I enjoy doing custom knits and sometimes customer orders can present a design challenge which I enjoy.
Do you have a favourite type of yarn and why is it so special? I enjoy all types of knitting and don’t really have a favourite yarn as I use all different yarns for different projects though working with expensive yarn is sometimes a treat.
