I spend the majority of my life at a computer. If I am not at the computer I am either making my way back to it or making a list of the things I need to do on my phone, which of course syncs with the computer. All this desk time really isn’t that good for me though. When I worked in an office I had to learn, implement and advice on desk ergonomics so I have made sure that my desk is set up properly but sometimes that it just the half of it. So a quick recap of the basics and some extra hints.
The top of your monitor should be at your eye level. You shouldn’t look up or down at the monitor. You can either move your monitor or your chair but which you move will depend on the rest.
When in typing mode your elbows should be at right angles. So your wrists are not below your elbows or higher than them. This is a chair moving one. Once you fiddled with the chair go back and check the monitor height.
Legs shouldn’t be dangling in the breeze nor up around your ears. Again this is chair fiddle time but check the monitor and your elbows. Oh and if you do need a stool for your feet it should be a proper stool and not half your paperwork that your hiding.
Walk away from the computer regularly. If you’re like me and have a pedantic machine this can be easily done at least once an hour as you mutter its going to have flying lessons. The idea behind this one is to rest your eyes. Oh and while we are on eyes those lovely glasses you picked out at the optician? Be a love and actually pop them on your head.
Now back to being at a computer all day…moving is essential to stop the numb bum bit. Try sitting at your desk and without clenching the desk for dear life lift both legs off the ground a few inches. That feeling in your tummy is your stomach muscles being used.
Another? Whilst sitting at your desk waiting for that email to load get your glutes on a workout. Just squeezing your glutes (your bum) and holding for 5 – 10 seconds and release. Repeat.
Now for your brain. In your breaks (obviously not in your work time) try maths or quizzes. By doing something different your brain stays active and stop it sneaking off for a snooze. As I work from home for myself (I have the most excellent boss you know) my down time can vary from putting the washing out, preparing tea or having fun with a few games in the casino. I don’t play just anywhere and made sure I checked them out first at excellent casino site casinoreviews.co.uk. As long as you are sensible and keep to your spending limits though.
Lastly and one that is forgotten a lot. Your desks health and hygiene. You breath all over your poor little desk, keyboard and phone all day. You sneeze at it. Cough at it. At least once a week, when you do that desk clearing thing, give it a wipe over with anti-bacteria spray.
